Ready to get on board the course creation train but not sure what topic you should create your course on? Maybe you’ve got a few different topics in mind and can’t decide which one to start with.

Keep reading because I’m going to share with you 3 ways to ensure you choose the right topic for your course and that it’s a course that is set to wow.

1. Choose a topic that you’re passionate about

If you’re not passionate about your topic can you really expect your prospective audience to be? Your passion for your chosen topic is going to translate through your course content, your videos, written content, audio. Likewise, if you’re not passionate about your course topic, your students are going to pick up on that. It’s pretty hard to sit through training that is being given by someone who either doesn’t believe in what they’re saying or care about it.

Being passionate about something fills you with enthusiasm and excitement to share it.

The information will flow freely and building a course that your audience will love isn’t going to feel like a chore.

When you’re deciding on your topic ask yourself these questions:

  • What do I love doing?
  • What makes me excited?
  • What do I love talking to other people about, sharing about?
  • What do I wish more people knew or cared about?

The answers to these questions will give you a better sense of where your passions lie and what you could build your course on.

2. Choose a topic you’re knowledgeable about

Step 2 is to choose a topic that you know a lot about. You don’t have to be the leading expert of how the most extensive knowledge on the topic, but you do need to be able to pass knowledge on to others (it is a course after all).

Content is king when it comes to selling a course, and you want to be sharing knowledge that isn’t easy to come by and someone (lots of someones) is willing to pay for.

So once you’ve narrowed down the topics you’re passionate about, begin evaluating your level of knowledge of these topics. Ask yourself these questions:

What topic do I have the most experience in?

  • Do I have any degrees in the topics I’m passionate about?
  • What topics have I been practising or working on the longest?
  • What topics have I helped other people on before?

3. Choose a topic that is in high demand.

The final step in the process of deciding on your perfect course topic is to decide on a topic that is in demand...a topic that people want to know about.

This is a critical part of the equation.

This step ensures that you’re going to have an audience of prospective customers, interested in your topic and learning from you.

A topic that isn’t in demand is unlikely to bring in the sales you’re hoping for.

As a part of validating your course topic and determining how in-demand it is, ask yourself these questions:

  • Is the topic relevant to today?
  • Are people asking about the topic?
  • Are there other courses on the topic?
  • Are there gaps in information in the other courses?

If you’ve answered yes to these questions then you’re on a good path, it looks like you can validate your course topic; that there is a demand for it.

This 3 part formula is one that will lead to success in choosing the perfect course topic. You need all three parts...passion, knowledge and demand!
